*The first celbration of the New Year dates back 4,000 years ago to the ancient Babylonians. It was not observed in January as we do today, but was celebrated as the beginning of spring. They also started the tradition of making resolutions. It is said that there most popular resolution was the returning of borrowed tools. Today the most popular resolution is losing weight, which also makes it the most popular resolution not kept.
*Celebrating the new year on January 1st was started by Julius Ceasar.
*1907 marked the first year the ball was dropped in Times Square, New York City. It was used
due to a fireworks ban in New York. Its has dropped every year since except for 1942 and 1943, due to wartime restrictions.
*In some countries, including Mexico, Bolivia, and Italy, there is a tradition of wearing red underwear on New Year's Eve. It is said to bring good luck for the entire year.
*In Japan it is celebrated by decorating their homes with bamboo shoots and pine tree branches.
