  • The fourth of July was not declared a national holiday until 1938 when it was made into a paid holiday for workers.

  • Benjamin Franklin proposed the turkey as the national bird. He was overruled by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams who insisted upon the bald eagle.

  • The number of Americans who spend the holiday at family or friends is 41 million.

  • The stars on the original flag are in a circle so all the Colonies would appear equal.

  • Approximately 150 million hot dogs will be consumed this July 4th.

  • There were only two signers to the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. One was John Hancock. Most of them signed one month later.

  • Three of our first five presidents died on July 4th – John Adams, Monroe, and Jefferson.

  • Fireworks were first used in 1777 in Philadelphia to celebrate the first anniversary.

  • Every 4th of July the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped, not rung, thirteen times in honor of the original colonies.

  • Although written during the War of 1812, the “Star Spangled Banner” did not become the national anthem until 1931.

  • Eight of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence were actually born in Britain, ranging in age from 26 to Ben Franklin at 70. The average age was 45.

  • 63% of all Americans will attend a fireworks display.

  • 80% attend a barbecue or cookout.

  • 76% get together with family.

  • 32% watch a parade.
